Tunisian Economy Minister Stresses Importance of Social Protection in Development Programs
Tunisian Minister of Economy and Planning, Samir Abdelhafidh, emphasized the importance of strengthening the state's social role in all its programs and policies during a panel discussion on social protection in the Middle East and North Africa, held in Washington on Wednesday.
Advancements in Supporting Vulnerable Populations
Abdelhafidh highlighted Tunisia's progress in supporting vulnerable populations, particularly through the implementation of the social security program. He also presented measures adopted to protect workers laid off for economic reasons and the creation of a social protection fund dedicated to female agricultural workers.
Groupe Consultatif pour l'Afrique Meeting
The minister then participated in the Groupe Consultatif pour l'Afrique meeting, alongside World Bank President Ajay Banga, where various development issues were discussed, including energy, infrastructure, employment, the role of the private sector, and World Bank support for these sectors.
Pandemic Fund Conference
During a high-level conference organized by the Pandemic Fund, Abdelhafidh stressed the importance of cooperation with the fund and highlighted its action in favor of developing the health sector. He also reaffirmed Tunisia's commitment to ensuring the success of the international One Health conference, scheduled to take place in June 2025, with the participation of numerous international organizations.
Bilateral Meeting with UNOPS
On the sidelines of the meetings, Abdelhafidh met with Kirstine Damkjaer, Assistant Executive Director of UNOPS, to review existing cooperation, particularly in public procurement and technical assistance, and explore new avenues of collaboration.
Regional Development Policies Session
During a working session on regional development policies, World Bank experts shared international best practices. Abdelhafidh presented the main orientations of Tunisia's new development plan, elaborated according to the recent territorial reform and constitutional provisions, to promote truly inclusive and equitable development.
