Algerian and Libyan Customs Services Agree to Strengthen Cooperation to Secure Goods Circulation and Combat Counterfeiting

Algerian and Libyan customs services reached an agreement on Monday, December 23, during a meeting in Algiers, to reinforce and coordinate their efforts to secure the circulation of goods, combat counterfeiting, smuggling, and drug trafficking between the two neighboring countries.

It is worth noting that the turnover of counterfeiting in Tunisia was estimated at €154 million at the end of November 2024.

According to Abdelhafidh Bakhouche, the Algerian Director-General of Customs, the objectives of both countries are convergent and well-defined. One of the key points discussed during this meeting was the need to coordinate efforts in the areas of digitalization and continuous training, particularly for administrative applications.

It is also worth recalling that Tunisian President Kais Saied, Algerian President Abdelmmajid Tebboune, and Libyan Presidential Council President Mohamed El Menfi participated in a Maghreb summit last March to strengthen the union between the three countries. During this meeting, border security was one of the main topics, and a security coordination mechanism was decided upon.

This agreement aims to further strengthen the cooperation between the two countries in the fight against counterfeiting, smuggling, and drug trafficking, and to ensure the secure circulation of goods between Algeria and Libya.
