Global Food Prices on the Decline, but Food Security Remains a Concern
After a period of increase between 2020 and 2022, the prices of staple foods such as cereals, oils, and sugar have begun to decline in 2023, and this trend has continued into 2024.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), these products have seen their prices decrease by 2.1%, with cereals and sugar leading the way.
However, despite this drop in prices, the global food security situation remains concerning due to conflicts, extreme climate phenomena, and economic crises. The FAO is calling for $1.9 billion in humanitarian aid to support populations facing acute food insecurity.
