Tunisia on the Verge of Achieving Food Self-Sufficiency
According to a report published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in early April, Tunisia is expected to record an exceptional cereal harvest for the 2025/2026 campaign, with 1.35 million tons of wheat and 500,000 tons of barley.
Favorable winter climate conditions have contributed to this performance, which is expected to significantly reduce imports: -10% for wheat and -40% for barley. To absorb this production, collection capacities will be extended to 7.6 million quintals.
With 1.173 million hectares planted this season, Tunisia reaffirms its commitment to strengthening its food sovereignty. While climate challenges remain, this dynamic marks a turning point towards a more resilient and autonomous agriculture.
