Tunisian-Chinese Cooperation: A New Era for the El Menzah Olympic Stadium Project

During a working meeting held on Wednesday, the Minister of Equipment and Housing, Sarra Zaâfarani Zanzari, and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Tunisia, Wan Li, discussed the proposed measures by China to implement the El Menzah Olympic Stadium development project. This project falls within the framework of Sino-Tunisian cooperation, strengthened following the visit of the Head of Government, Kamel Maddour, to China, where he participated in the Sino-African Summit in Beijing from September 3 to 5, 2024.

It is worth recalling that at the heart of Tunisian sports history, two monuments stand proudly: the Vélodrome Stadium and the El Menzah Stadium. The Vélodrome Stadium, built in 1927, was the precursor to the El Menzah Stadium, symbolizing the country's first steps on the international sports scene. With an initial capacity of 5,000 seats, it was the gathering place for sports enthusiasts and the theater of Tunisian athletes' exploits.

This meeting brought together representatives from several ministries, including those of Equipment, Youth and Sports, Foreign Affairs, Economy, and Planning, as well as officials from the concerned ministries. The Minister emphasized the importance of daily coordination between the different departments to ensure the project's success and overcome potential difficulties.

Sarra Zaâfarani Zanzari also highlighted the strategic level of the partnership between Tunisia and China, expressing her desire to strengthen this collaboration for the benefit of both nations. Ambassador Wan Li, for his part, reaffirmed China's commitment to continuing this cooperation and exploring new opportunities for the future.
