Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2024

The Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2024, published by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, assesses the efficiency of ports based on the total time spent by container ships at the port, from arrival at anchorage to departure after operations. The most performing ports manage to reduce this time thanks to modern infrastructure, efficient logistics systems, and good connectivity with the hinterland.

In Africa, the ranking reveals a stark contrast between the North of the continent, where Egyptian and Moroccan ports dominate, and Sub-Saharan Africa, where performance remains more modest. Port Said in Egypt and Tanger-Med in Morocco are among the best in the world, while Dakar in Senegal stands out as the Sub-Saharan leader thanks to significant investments and modernization of infrastructure and connectivity.

Tunisia, with the port of Rades, ranks 13th in Africa. Its score below the continental average is explained by still lengthy stopover times and logistics and customs procedures to be improved. The majority of African ports suffer from technological and human limitations, but their strategic geographical position and investment potential represent essential levers to accelerate their competitiveness and become true regional hubs.
