Free Mobile Internet Access for Young Mauritians Aged 18-25
Starting from September 1, 2024, young Mauritians between 18 and 25 years old will benefit from free mobile internet access.
This initiative is part of the 2024-2025 government budget. According to several sources, this program, which is expected to cost around 31.5 million Mauritian rupees (approximately $677,733) per month, aims to facilitate access to information, education, and other online opportunities for nearly 100,000 young people.
Each beneficiary will receive a monthly package of 200 gigabytes, usable with one of the three telecom operators in the country: MyT, Emtel, or Chili. Access will be available via 4G or 5G networks, as well as 350 Wi-Fi hotspots already installed across the island.
This measure is part of the Mauritian government's efforts to promote a "knowledge-based economy" and prepare the country's digital future.
By providing free internet access, the government hopes to enhance the skills of young Mauritians, better preparing them for the job market.
