Public-Private Partnership to Build Bridge Connecting Djerba and Al-Jorf

The General Instance of Public-Private Partnership has announced a project to build a bridge connecting Djerba and Al-Jorf, in the governorate of Mednine, through a public-private partnership (PPP) agreement. The bridge will span a length of 2 kilometers.

Djerba Island, with an area of 514 km², 20 kilometers of beaches, and over 135 hotels, is a gem of Tunisian tourism. Currently, the island is connected to the mainland by a 7-kilometer Roman road to the south (between El Kantara in Djerba and the city of Zarzis). Alternatively, visitors can reach the island via two ferry routes between Ajim and El-Jorf, with a frequency of 132 round trips, serving an average of 13,500 passengers and 2,500 vehicles.

It is on this ferry route that the bridge is planned to be built. The operating costs of the ferries are excessive, and travelers often have to wait a long time for the ferry to arrive, which is why the state has opted for the construction of this bridge.

The bridge will make the island more accessible and attractive, facilitating traffic and boosting the economy. It will also avoid the high maintenance costs of the ferries. However, the budget estimate for this project has not been specified.
