Nobel Peace Prize 2024 Awarded to Japanese Organization Nihon Hidankyo

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2024 has been awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, a movement that brings together survivors of the nuclear bombs dropped by the United States on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The organization was recognized for its efforts to testify that nuclear weapons must never be used again.

Toshiyuki Mimaki, co-responsible for Nihon Hidankyo, stated, "It has been said that nuclear weapons would maintain peace throughout the world. But nuclear weapons can be used by terrorists. For example, if Russia uses them against Ukraine, and Israel against Gaza, it will not stop there. Political leaders must be aware of this."

This award comes at a time when the number of conflicts worldwide has almost doubled since 2009.

Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, who was imprisoned in her country for opposing mandatory veiling and the death penalty.

Han Kang, a South Korean writer, became the first non-Western female writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of micro-RNAs and their role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

The Nobel Prize in Economics, added to the original Nobel Prizes in 1969, will conclude the awards on Monday, October 14.
