Extended Validity of Expired Documents and Visas for Living in Portugal

According to the Portuguese government authorities, documents and visas for living in Portugal that expired on or after February 22, 2020, remain valid until June 30, 2025, and the Portuguese government will accept them for all legal purposes, in accordance with a specific decree.

This rule applies to various types of documents, including:

  • Residence permits (AR), including AR CPLP
  • EU registration certificates
  • Residence cards for EU citizens and their families
  • Short-stay, temporary, and residence visas

As a result, all foreign nationals holding an expired visa or residence permit, issued on or after February 22, 2020, can stay, exit, and enter Portugal based on these documents, as they continue to be accepted by all Portuguese public authorities for legal purposes until June 30, 2025.

This decision is good news for the Tunisian community in Portugal and those considering immigrating, as it greatly simplifies the administrative situation and provides flexibility in the face of administrative delays.

Note that the extension of the validity of the mentioned documents and visas until June 30, 2025, is limited to Portugal and is binding on Portuguese public authorities. Entry and circulation in another Schengen State remain subject to the conditions established in the Schengen Borders Code.
