Losses of Tunisian Dairy Farmers Estimated at Over 3 Billion Dinars Between 2020 and 2023

According to Mnaouar Sghaier, Director of Animal Production at the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP), the losses suffered by Tunisian dairy farmers between 2020 and 2023 are estimated to be over 3 billion dinars. These losses are due to the gap between production and sale costs, leading to severe consequences for the future of the sector. Many farmers, unable to bear these financial losses, are forced to abandon their profession.

The low level of national beef production per female unit, which stands at only 103 kg in 2023 compared to 150 kg potential, partly explains the rise in red meat prices. This decline in productivity has also led to lower red meat consumption, estimated at 40 kg per person per year in Tunisia, well below the global average of 60 kg. As a result, poultry meat consumption has increased.

Sghaier also highlighted the structural difficulties faced by the sector, including risks related to water stress, climate change, emerging diseases, and rising feed prices. He warned that the absence of risk-sharing policies with farmers exacerbates the situation, leading to higher costs, a decline in livestock, and increased dependence on imports.

The livestock sector represents 35% of Tunisia's agricultural GDP, with approximately 112,000 cattle farmers and 274,000 small ruminant farmers in 2022, according to the Office of Livestock and Pastures. The Director of Animal Production emphasized that the lack of state support measures and insufficient risk-sharing policies continue to weaken the sector, contributing to a decline in livestock, a decrease in quality, and an increase in meat prices.
