Extension of Octopus Fishing Season Closure Announced
The Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries announced on Wednesday, October 15, the extension of the octopus fishing season closure for the 2024/2025 period. Initially scheduled from October 15, 2023, to October 15, 2025, this ban has been extended by an additional month, until November 15, 2025.
Reasons Behind the Decision
In an official statement, the ministry specified that this decision is part of a strategy to preserve fishery resources and ensure the sustainability of octopus fishing in Tunisian waters. This measure aims to allow for better renewal of the species, which has been heavily exploited in recent years.
Key Regulation Reminder
The ministry also recalled a crucial point of the current regulation: the minimum allowed size for octopus fishing is set at 1 kilogram.
Part of a Broader Sustainable Management Effort
This decision is part of a series of measures for the sustainable management of marine resources, as several experts sound the alarm on the progressive scarcity of octopus in the Mediterranean. The extension of the fishing season closure is intended to help mitigate this issue and ensure the long-term viability of octopus populations.
