Tunisia's Adhesion to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) Reflected in President's Visit to China

On the sidelines of President Kaïs Saïed's visit to the People's Republic of China from May 28 to June 1, 2024, at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, on the occasion of the 10th ministerial meeting of the Sino-Arab Cooperation Forum, many believe that this visit reflects Tunisia's adhesion to the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

A Brief Reminder: Tunisia Joins AIIB in 2019

Tunisia officially joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in 2019, along with Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, and Uruguay. At the time, the new group of members demonstrated the importance these countries attach to improving infrastructure and connectivity with Asia.

AIIB's Growing Membership

"The increase in membership from Africa and Latin America demonstrates the importance these countries attach to improving infrastructure and connectivity with Asia," said Sir Danny Alexander, Vice President and Secretary General of AIIB in a statement.

The bank's charter was signed by 57 countries before its launch in January 2016. In 2017 and 2018, AIIB approved 36 new membership applications. AIIB hopes to continue welcoming new members in the future.

Today's Membership

Today, AIIB, headquartered in Beijing, has 97 approved members worldwide. The complete list can be found at: MEMBERS AND PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS OF THE BANK
