Apple and Nvidia in Talks to Invest in OpenAI, Valuing the Company at Over $100 Billion
According to reliable sources, including the Wall Street Journal, Apple and Nvidia are in discussions to invest in OpenAI, a move that would strengthen their ties with a key partner in the artificial intelligence (AI) race. Microsoft, OpenAI's largest strategic investor with over $10 billion invested, is also expected to participate in the funding round.
The investment would be part of a new fundraising effort by OpenAI, which would value the company behind ChatGPT at over $100 billion. In February, OpenAI was valued at $80 billion after concluding an agreement that allowed the sale of existing shares as part of a public tender offer led by Thrive Capital. Since then, the company's value has continued to rise, driven by the AI arms race sparked by the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, prompting companies across all sectors to invest billions in the technology to stay ahead of the competition and capture market share.
OpenAI is playing an increasingly important role in Apple's AI strategy. In June, the iPhone maker integrated OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot into Apple devices as part of its "Apple Intelligence" initiative. Apple has also reportedly secured an observer role on OpenAI's board of directors.
