FIFA Awards 2030 and 2034 World Cup Hosting Rights to Spain, Morocco, Portugal, and Saudi Arabia

Despite various criticisms, FIFA has officially awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup to Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, and to Saudi Arabia for the 2034 edition. The 211 national federations ratified the bids during a virtual general assembly. There was no suspense since last year, as there was no competition for the two bids, following several withdrawals for 2030 and an accelerated arrangement for 2034.

The 2030 World Cup will celebrate a century after the first World Cup held in 1930 in Uruguay. With 11 out of 20 proposed sites, Spain is expected to be the main host, after hosting the 1982 World Cup, while Morocco, after several attempts, including in 2010 against South Africa, will become the second African country to host the final phase. Spain and Morocco are competing to host the opening and closing matches, with the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid and the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, and the massive 115,000-seat Moroccan stadium in the city of Ben Slimane, on the outskirts of Casablanca. Portugal, host of the 2004 European Championship, will host the final phase for the first time in its history, proposing two stadiums in Lisbon and Porto to host one of the two semifinals.

Thanks to the continental rotation principle of the tournament, FIFA reduced the field of candidates for the 2034 edition to countries in Asia and Oceania, and the process unfolded at lightning speed within a month in autumn 2023. Saudi Arabia found itself the sole candidate. The kingdom, seeking to diversify its revenue sources for the post-oil era, has only two of the 15 stadiums with a minimum capacity of 40,000 spectators required to host the 48 qualified teams. In addition to logistical challenges, the summer heat may prompt a shift to winter or autumn, as with Qatar 2022, but the Ramadan period, which may coincide with the tournament, must also be taken into account.

The investments planned by Morocco are estimated at $8.7 billion. This amount will be dedicated to structural projects, including the extension of the high-speed line from Kénitra to Marrakech and the development of a regional express network in the Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech agglomerations. As for Saudi Arabia, the cost is unknown, as the event will benefit from projects launched under the "Vision 2030" framework, which exceeds $3 trillion over the 2019-2030 period.
