Total Natural Gas Demand Increases by 6% between January 2024 and January 2025
According to the January 2025 energy situation report published by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines, total natural gas demand rose by 6% between January 2024 and January 2025, reaching 392 ktep.
Electricity Generation Drives Demand
The demand for natural gas for electricity production increased by 4%, with the electricity generation sector remaining the largest consumer of natural gas, accounting for 61% of total demand in January 2025. In fact, over 95% of electricity production relies on natural gas.
Final Uses of Natural Gas
Excluding electricity production, natural gas demand for final uses increased by 8%, reaching 153 ktep. The demand from medium and low-pressure customers rose by 9%, while high-pressure customers saw a 3% increase.
Electricity Generation Efficiency Remains Stable
The overall specific consumption of electricity generation means remained almost stable between January 2024 and January 2025, standing at 188.3 tep/GWh.
National Petroleum Product Demand Increases by 1%
National demand for petroleum products slightly increased by 1% between January 2024 and January 2025, reaching 381 ktep. The Observatory noted a 3% increase in gasoline demand and a 22% surge in jet fuel demand. In contrast, fuel demand decreased by 18%, and petcoke demand dropped by 3%.
Petroleum Product Consumption Structure Remains Largely Unchanged
The structure of petroleum product consumption did not undergo significant changes between January 2024 and January 2025, except for certain products. The share of fuel decreased from 3% to 2%, while the share of diesel decreased from 45% to 43%. The share of jet fuel, on the other hand, increased from 4% to 5%.
LPG and GPL Consumption Trends
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumption decreased by 2% between January 2024 and January 2025, accounting for 61% of total petroleum product consumption. Meanwhile, GPL consumption rose by 11%, and petroleum coke consumption, used exclusively by cement plants, decreased by 3% during the same period (partially estimated data).
Jet Fuel Demand Soars by 22%
Finally, jet fuel consumption recorded a significant 22% increase in January 2025 compared to the same period the previous year.
