Simplified Travel for Frequent Visitors: EU's "Cascade" Regime for Multiple-Entry Schengen Visas
The European Union is making travel easier for reliable individuals with its "cascade" system for multiple-entry Schengen visas. Contrary to rumors, these visas do not currently exceed 5 years, but they offer more flexibility to rule-abiding frequent travelers.
How Does the Cascade Regime Work?
This system, outlined in the Visa Code (Regulation EC 810/2009 amended), rewards good track records.
- After three problem-free visas used over two years: a 1-year visa is granted.
- After a 1-year visa is respected: a 2-year validity is offered.
- After a 2-year visa is used without issues: up to 5 years maximum can be granted.
The limit remains at 5 years, still with the 90-day rule within a 180-day period in the Schengen area.
Who Can Benefit from This Regime?
Only "reliable" travelers are eligible: those with a clean history in the VIS system, solid finances, and recurring motives such as business or family. Embassies decide on a case-by-case basis, with no automatic guarantee.
Future Prospects
Discussions are underway for visas of up to 10 years, but nothing has been adopted as of February 2026.
