OpenAI Unveils GPT-4o Mini: A Compact Model with Superior Textual Intelligence and Multimodal Reasoning

After launching GPT-4o last May, OpenAI has now introduced GPT-4o mini, a more compact model with superior textual intelligence and multimodal reasoning. This new model has surpassed GPT-3.5 Turbo in terms of performance and supports the same range of languages as GPT-4o. In ChatGPT, GPT-4o mini has become the official replacement for GPT-3.5.

OpenAI highlighted that this model will offer new possibilities to developers, stating: "It presents good performance in terms of function calls, which can enable developers to create applications that retrieve data or take actions with external systems, as well as improved performance in long context compared to GPT-3.5 Turbo."

GPT-4o mini excels in several areas, including mathematics and coding skills.

Notably, this model has a significantly lower cost than its predecessors: it is 60% cheaper than GPT-3.5 Turbo, thanks to its reduced computational resources and memory usage, which allows for lower infrastructure costs.

The only minor drawback is that GPT-4o's knowledge cutoff is October 2023, preventing it from providing an answer to a question about a 2024 event.
