Changes to French Nationality Access: What You Need to Know
For many Tunisians, France remains a preferred destination for work, study, or family reunification. However, starting from January 1, 2026, France will tighten the conditions for accessing its nationality. These new rules primarily concern naturalization, reintegration, and nationality by marriage applications, and are part of the government's effort to strengthen the integration of future citizens. Understanding these changes is essential for those planning to become French in the coming years.
New Language Requirements
The first change concerns the level of French language proficiency. Until now, a B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CECRL) was sufficient to submit an application. As of 2026, this threshold will be raised to B2, which implies a more complete mastery of the language, both spoken and written. Candidates will now have to demonstrate their ability to:
- Understand complex texts
- Participate in in-depth conversations
- Write structured documents
Mandatory Civic Exam
In parallel, a civic exam will become compulsory for all naturalization or reintegration applications. This exam aims to assess knowledge of:
- Republican values
- French institutions
- Citizen rights and duties The exam will be in the form of a multiple-choice questionnaire and will also cover practical aspects of life in France, such as the functioning of public services or the country's history.
Proving Integration and Adhesion to Republican Principles
For candidates, it will no longer be enough to prove their residence or language skills. They will also have to demonstrate their understanding of French society and their adherence to republican principles.
Concrete Implications
All applications submitted before January 1, 2026, will continue to follow the old rules. However, for those submitted from 2026 onwards, candidates will have to prepare for stricter requirements:
- Mandatory B2 level
- Civic exam
- Reinforced proof of integration
In anticipation of these changes, language training centers and organizations are already expecting an increase in demand for targeted courses and preparation.
