Ministry of Transport Organizes Workshop on Tunisia's Logistics Vision 2040

The Ministry of Transport organized a workshop on Monday, May 13, 2024, to discuss the results of a study on Tunisia's logistics vision for 2040, aiming to position Tunisia as a logistics hub in the Mediterranean region.

Workshop Overview

The workshop, led by Sarra Zemzemi Zanzri, Minister of Equipment, Housing, and Transport, was attended by experts from the ACC group of studies and Samarcande, as well as several officials from the ministry and other institutions, under the supervision of the concerned entities.

Opening Speech

In her opening speech, the Head of the Prime Minister's Cabinet, Samia Charfi, highlighted the efforts made to develop the logistics sector in Tunisia. She emphasized the importance of the study on Tunisia's logistics vision for 2040, presenting it as an opportunity to attract investments and promote a transition to a knowledge-based economy.

Integration and Cooperation

She also called for greater integration between different structures and between the public and private sectors to achieve the objectives defined in Tunisia's logistics vision and make the country an attractive and efficient Mediterranean logistics hub.

Minister's Address

Sarra ZaĆ¢frani Zanzri emphasized the participatory approach adopted by the ministry to promote various sectors, including logistics. She considered the organization of this workshop as a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives in a promising sector at the international and national levels, given its added value and support for various development domains, both socially and economically.

Strategic Objectives

She added that the strategic objectives consist of improving the efficiency of the logistics system, developing multimodal transport to support the competitiveness of the national economy, reinforcing its role in integrating the national economy into global value chains, and making this sector a significant source of growth. She highlighted Tunisia's advantages, including its strategic location near Europe and on Mediterranean trade routes, as well as its qualified human resources and rich cultural heritage, which enable it to integrate more effectively into the regional and international economy.

Development Efforts

Efforts are underway to develop services and strengthen competencies, including the implementation of a warehouse management system (WMS) to manage the flow of goods at Tunis-Carthage Airport, which will reduce their average stay from 14 days to 3 days.

Challenges and Solutions

Despite efforts to develop the legal, institutional, and organizational aspects of logistics, as well as the launch of procedures for establishing its real estate inventory, the pace of implementing the logistics development plan has not yet reached the desired level due to a lack of coordination, multiple stakeholders, and unfinished infrastructure projects. To overcome these challenges, the ministry is working to establish an effective governance system for the country's logistics system, enabling the implementation of the logistics development plan through the implementation of priority projects in the national network of logistics zones. Particular attention is being given to the issue of radiation and complete profitability of the network within the framework of an integrated national strategic vision.
