Meta Activates Emergency Procedure After AI Chatbot Falsely Claims Joe Biden is Still US President
Meta was forced to activate an emergency procedure this week after its artificial intelligence chatbot incorrectly stated that Joe Biden was still the President of the United States, despite Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, 2025.
According to tests, the chatbot was still responding on Thursday that Biden was president, while acknowledging Trump's inauguration. This incident triggered a "SEV" (site event), an internal procedure for rapidly resolving critical issues.
This is the third emergency intervention related to the presidential transition for Meta this week. Other incidents include an error that forced some users to follow Trump's official accounts, as well as his family and administration, and a temporary block on hashtag searches related to Democrats on Instagram.
Meta stated that these problems result from the complexity of transitioning official accounts on its platforms and the technical limitations of generative AI systems. The company promises to improve its features to avoid such errors in the future.
