Meta to Discontinue Messenger Website
Meta, the company behind Facebook and Messenger, has announced the upcoming closure of messenger.com, the independent website for its messaging service. This closure is scheduled for April 2026 and marks the end of using Messenger without going through Facebook.
Background
Since late 2025, Meta had already removed the Messenger applications for Mac and Windows. The web version will now follow the same path. After April, users who want to access their messages from a computer will have to go through facebook.com/messages.
Impact on Users
For mobile users, there's no need to worry: the Messenger app on smartphones will continue to function normally. Conversations, notifications, and calls will remain intact, and nothing will change in the mobile experience.
Reason for Closure
The company aims to simplify its digital ecosystem and reduce the number of versions to maintain. By centralizing Messenger on Facebook for computer users, Meta hopes to make its services more consistent and easier to update for all users.
Notification
When accessing your Facebook account and opening the section dedicated to your Messenger messages, you may receive a notification indicating the current situation.
