Sidi Bou Saïd Hill Protection Project Reaches New Milestone

The project to protect Sidi Bou Saïd hill from landslides has reached a new stage. The steering committee, which met on June 10 under the chairmanship of the Minister of Equipment and Housing, reviewed the progress of the preparatory studies and announced the start of work in the coming weeks.

Background

This meeting took place as part of the mandate given to the Ministry of Equipment and Housing by the Head of Government in January 2026 to oversee the studies and security work on the hill. The project is part of the national program to protect urban and coastal areas, as well as to control structures.

Progress Update

During the session, participants examined the progress of the first phase of the study, which focused on diagnosing the situation and collecting the necessary data to define the interventions. Several agreements have already been concluded to support this technical stage.

  • The Ministry has called upon the National Center for Remote Sensing to carry out topographic surveys and aerial photography necessary for the project.
  • Another agreement was signed with the National Office of Mines to develop geological and geophysical maps aimed at identifying the most exposed areas and prioritizing interventions based on their level of urgency.

Minister's Statement

The Minister of Equipment, Salah Zouari, emphasized the importance of respecting the set schedule and mobilizing all necessary means to accelerate the launch of the project. He also highlighted that the project is among the state's priority public projects, given its importance for the protection of inhabitants, infrastructure, and property in the area.

Project Significance

Beyond its security implications, the project also aims to preserve one of the country's most emblematic sites. Sidi Bou Saïd hill is a major historical, cultural, and architectural heritage, whose stability is considered a national issue.
