Meliá Hotels International Returns to Tunisia with a Solid 5-Year Plan
A New Chapter for Tourism in Tunisia
The first Spanish hotel group has announced its return to Tunisia, with a plan to establish five hotels in five different destinations over the next five years. The news was officially announced on March 25, 2026, marking Meliá Hotels International's return to the country.
70 Years of Experience and a Global Presence
With 70 years of experience in the tourism industry and a presence in over 40 countries, Meliá Hotels International is well-equipped to make a significant impact in Tunisia. The group aims to reach 3,000 rooms by 2030, with the first resort opening in Mahdia this year. The 307-room resort will be the first to operate under the Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand, making Mahdia the gateway to the group's presence in Tunisia.
Expansion Plans and Brand Deployment
The four remaining hotels will be opened between 2027 and 2029 in Tabarka, Monastir, Djerba, and Tunis. Three brands will be deployed to cater to different traveler profiles: Sol, Meliá Hotels & Resorts, and Gran Meliá. The group's strategy is to acquire existing hotels, renovate them, and upgrade them to meet international standards, rather than building new ones. This approach will reduce delays, increase efficiency, and result in a tangible upgrade for the destination.
Partnership with Management Hospitality Group
To achieve its goals, Meliá Hotels International has partnered with Management Hospitality Group (MHG), a Tunisian company born out of a joint venture between Alliance Group and Voyages 2000. MHG brings its knowledge of the local market, network, contacts, and operational experience, while Meliá contributes its brand, standards, and access to major European markets. The two companies complement each other, making for a strong partnership.
Why Tunisia?
Tunisia was not chosen by chance. The country already welcomes over 11 million visitors each year and is transitioning towards a higher-quality tourism industry. Meliá Hotels International has arrived at the right time, and the group is aware of the opportunities that this presents. With its solid 5-year plan, Meliá is poised to make a significant contribution to Tunisia's tourism industry.
