Mdhilla 2 TSP Project Reaches a Crucial Stage

On May 28, 2025, the Minister of Industry, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, brought together stakeholders to accelerate the Mdhilla 2 Triple Superphosphate (TSP) project, deemed essential for regional and national economic development. The Minister emphasized the importance of close coordination between all stakeholders to guarantee the project's completion within the set deadlines.

The project, launched in 2010 by the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT), had been stalled for a long time, mainly due to social tensions. The demonstrations had slowed down a project that had reached 95% completion at one stage. To get it back on track, new agreements were signed in September 2024 between the GCT and Tunisian and foreign companies.

Mdhilla 2 represents a significant lever for Tunisia. Once operational, the factory will produce 400,000 tons of TSP and 180,000 tons of phosphoric acid per year, generating an estimated revenue of 521 million dinars.

In addition to the economic benefits, the project will have significant social and energy impacts. It plans to create 400 direct jobs, including 50 for graduates, and will contribute to national energy stability through self-sufficient production and a surplus of up to 5 megawatts per hour.

It is worth noting that Mdhilla 2 consists of four major technical components:

  • A sulfuric acid production unit and a utilities unit
  • A diluted and concentrated phosphoric acid production unit
  • A sulfur fusion and filtration unit
  • A triple superphosphate production unit
