Mauritius Launches Digital ID Card, Becomes First African Country to Adopt ISO-Compliant ID

The Mauritian government has taken a significant step forward in its digital strategy by launching the Mobil ID, a digital identity card, on August 29. This initiative makes Mauritius the first African country to adopt an ID card that conforms to international ISO standards.

According to several sources, the Mobil ID is part of the "Digital Mauritius 2030" strategy, which aims to modernize the Mauritian economy by investing in digital infrastructure and digitizing public services.

The card enables users to declare a change of address, report the loss of a physical card, and sign official documents electronically. It is equipped with advanced security systems, including two-factor authentication.

The launch of the Mobil ID comes as Mauritius has approximately 982,500 internet users out of a population of 1.3 million, according to DataReportal's data from early 2024. This digital development is also supported by the extension of the 5G network to the entire country by Mauritius Telecom last June.
