Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mahdia to Irrigate 700 Hectares of Agricultural Land
Hichem Al-Jammali, Regional Director of the National Sanitation Office (ONAS), announced that the wastewater treatment plant in Mahdia will enable the irrigation of a 700-hectare agricultural area. An analysis of the treated water's salinity is currently underway, while industrial units will directly utilize the water from the initial treatment stage.
During the visit of the Minister of Environment's Chief of Staff on Monday, Al-Jammali revealed that the water's salinity has been reduced to 2.5 g/l, making it suitable for irrigation. He also highlighted that the Regional Agricultural Commission has invested approximately 400,000 dinars to conduct a study on the irrigated area. The plant, which already generates 20% of its electricity needs, aims to increase this figure to 60% before achieving complete energy autonomy.
Operational since November 2024, the plant produces up to 400 kilowatts of electricity using generators powered by biogas produced on-site. This state-of-the-art equipment, which applies double and triple treatment processes, treats 16,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, with a capacity increase to 20,000 cubic meters during the summer season.
