New Accolade for the University of Carthage

The Tunisian institution has once again established itself as a committed academic player in the ecological transition. It has taken the top spot nationally and joined the ranks of the top 25 African universities in the 2025 edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, a prestigious international ranking that measures universities' sustainability performance every year.

A Notable Ranking in a Global Competition

According to the university's statement, the University of Carthage has risen to 22nd place in Africa and 688th place globally, out of 1,745 universities from 105 countries. This positioning confirms the solidity of a long-term environmental strategy, which focuses on:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Sustainable water management
  • Waste sorting and valorization
  • Development of environmentally friendly infrastructure and mobility

In addition, the university has achieved a notable performance in the fields of teaching and research related to sustainable development, where it "holds the top national rank," according to the statement.

For the University of Carthage, this international recognition validates "a proactive and sustainable policy" and reinforces its ambition to actively contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Tunisian higher education.

GreenMetric: A Global Indicator

Created in 2010 by the University of Indonesia, the UI GreenMetric ranking has become one of the most comprehensive evaluation tools for measuring universities' environmental and social commitments. Its approach is based on a set of indicators covering:

  • Energy and climate
  • Water management
  • Waste
  • Infrastructure
  • Sustainable mobility
  • Teaching and research

Every year, an extensive international survey evaluates the actual policies implemented by universities to reduce their environmental footprint. The goal is clear: to encourage institutions and their partners to intensify their efforts in the face of climate challenges by adopting energy-efficient models, responsible management of natural resources, effective recycling systems, and green transportation modes.

The 2025 Edition: Focused on SDGs and Social Responsibility

The 2025 edition introduces a new section dedicated to how universities strengthen the integration of Sustainable Development Goals in higher education: "Advancing Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education: Stories from Our Institutions and Communities." This new axis highlights concrete initiatives undertaken on campuses and in communities, with the hope of fostering a collective mobilization for more sustainable, innovative, and forward-looking campuses.
