Tunisian Labor Union Announces New General Strike

The Deputy Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Sami Tahri, announced that the union's administrative body will meet on December 5 to set a date for a new general strike.

Reasons for the Strike

According to Tahri, the strike is in response to three main demands:

  • The establishment of genuine social dialogue
  • The defense of the right to negotiation and trade union rights
  • The rejection of the planned wage increase in the 2026 budget bill for the public and private sectors

Tahri described this increase as an "unacceptable novelty" and recalled that the UGTT had sent more than 17 letters to successive governments since the era of Najla Bouden, without receiving a response or commitment.

Plans for the Strike

The UGTT also specified that the next march will follow the usual ritual, with a gathering at Mohamed Ali Square. The union is preparing for a large-scale mobilization to push for its demands and defend the rights of workers in Tunisia.
