EU Court Rules Against Google and Apple in Landmark Cases

The European Union's Court of Justice (CJEU) has delivered verdicts on two major cases, one involving the dispute between the EU and Google, and the other concerning the tax benefits granted to Apple in Ireland.

The European Union aims to combat anti-competitive practices and unfair tax advantages.

Regarding Google, the company has been definitively fined €2.4 billion by the CJEU for abusing its dominant position in favor of its Google Shopping service. The case, which began in 2010, led to a fine by the European Commission in 2017. Despite several attempts to contest the decision, the CJEU has confirmed the sanction.

As for Apple, the company will have to reimburse €13 billion to Ireland following a CJEU decision. In 2016, the European Commission accused Apple of illegal tax benefits in Ireland, allowing it to avoid paying taxes. After the annulment of this decision by an EU tribunal, the CJEU has confirmed that the reimbursement must be made.

In total, the fines and reimbursements imposed on Google and Apple exceed €15 billion.
