Tunisian Organization Launches National Campaign Against Price Hikes
The Tunisian Organization for Consumer Information (OTIC) announced on Wednesday, August 27, the launch of a national campaign against the surge in prices.
Focus on Red Meat Sector
The campaign will initially focus on the red meat sector, before gradually expanding to all products and services affected by excessive price increases, explained the organization.
Transparency and Fair Pricing
In this context, OTIC is calling on the Ministries of Agriculture and Commerce, as well as control agencies, to clearly establish the real cost of producing red meat. The goal is to ensure that the decrease in animal feed prices is effectively reflected in the price of meat sold to consumers, thereby protecting Tunisians' purchasing power and guaranteeing decent living conditions.
Fair Profit Margins and Control
OTIC is also emphasizing the need to publish these costs transparently and set a ceiling for profit margins at each stage, from production to sale, whether among wholesalers or retailers. This aims to strike a fair balance between the interests of breeders and the rights of consumers.
Preserving National Livestock
Furthermore, OTIC is highlighting the importance of strengthening control over the slaughter of female animals and their importation, in order to preserve the national livestock.
Combating Monopolies and Speculation
This campaign will also shed light on monopoly and speculation circuits, identified as the main causes of unjustified price hikes. OTIC is demanding swift state intervention, strict enforcement of the law against offenders, increased support for local production, and the establishment of prices based on real production costs.
Protecting Purchasing Power
For OTIC, protecting purchasing power should not remain a mere slogan, but constitutes a fundamental commitment to ensuring all citizens a decent and serene life.
