Tunisia Leads the World in Organic Olive Production
Tunisia has established itself as a global leader in organic olive production, with approximately 144,000 hectares dedicated to organic olive farming. The sector has been recognized by the EU, Switzerland, and the UK for the quality of its products, according to the Tunisian News Agency (TAP).
Strategy to Strengthen Organic Agriculture
Tunisia is pursuing a strategy to reinforce its organic agriculture sector, with a target set for 2030. The Ministry of Agriculture aims to improve governance, enhance product quality, and consolidate Tunisia's presence in international markets.
Challenges Persist
Despite promising results, several challenges remain, according to the same source. Productivity is limited compared to the available potential, and product valorization is low, as a large portion is exported in semi-raw form. Furthermore, logistical infrastructure and supply chains require improvement to facilitate transportation and marketing.
Shift to High-Value Products
Industry professionals emphasize the importance of transitioning from exporting semi-raw products to high-value-added products to strengthen the competitiveness of the Tunisian label in global markets.
National Strategy and Development
The national strategy includes the creation of pilot zones in Sejnane, Kesra, El Haouaria, Majel Belabbes, and Hazoua. These zones combine organic production, ecotourism, and handicrafts, offering a model of diversified and sustainable development. Additionally, an official control and governance system aims to enhance the credibility and competitiveness of the sector.
