Tunisia Takes a New Step Towards Strengthening its Health Autonomy

The Pasteur Institute of Tunis (IPT) has put its therapeutic serum purification machine back into service, after several years of being out of order due to a technical failure. The announcement was made on Thursday, June 4, by the IPT. This resumption is expected to enable the country to cover its needs for anti-scorpion and anti-snake serum by 2027, while gradually restarting the supply of the local market with anti-rabies serum. At the heart of the serum manufacturing process, this equipment is considered a crucial link in the production chain. Its return to operation marks the return to full capacity of a strategic unit that produces serums for the treatment of scorpion stings, snake bites, and exposure to rabies. This relaunch is part of the national strategy to strengthen health sovereignty and reduce dependence on imports of essential biological products. It also comes in a context where health authorities are multiplying initiatives to consolidate national vaccine and serum production capacities.
