Tunisia Commits to Strengthening Social Protection System at Arab Ministers of Social Affairs Council

During the 44th session of the Arab Ministers of Social Affairs Council, held from December 22 to 25 in Bahrain, Tunisian Minister of Social Affairs, Issam Lahmar, expressed Tunisia's commitment to reinforcing its social protection system. This initiative is part of a broader approach aimed at reducing poverty in all its forms and promoting economic and social inclusion.

The minister highlighted that this revision of Tunisia's social policy aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 and respects the recommendations of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which encourages the establishment of a national social protection platform.

Lahmar emphasized that human development is at the heart of national development. Tunisia has therefore prioritized improving living conditions and enhancing social and health coverage. The country is also focusing on strengthening the scientific and cognitive skills of its citizens.

The minister detailed several essential social programs implemented to support social and economic inclusion. These initiatives include guaranteeing a minimum income for citizens, providing free or low-cost access to healthcare, and offering financial assistance to encourage entrepreneurship.

Finally, Lahmar stressed the particular importance given to people with disabilities. In this regard, Tunisia has established a specialized education system, supported by the state, with the creation of 312 dedicated centers. These institutions, financed and technically supported by the state, enable the support of nearly 14,000 children with disabilities, ensuring their inclusion and future.
