Obama Calls for Political Debate on AI

In response to the rapid pace of technological advancements driven by major tech companies, Obama has specifically called for strengthening the role of political leaders in shaping the future of this technology.

The former President encouraged Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader in the House of Representatives, to organize a public debate focused on U.S. AI policy should Democrats regain the majority following the November 3 mid-term elections.

Additionally, Obama urged candidates in the 2028 presidential race to present specific proposals regarding AI safety and its economic implications.

Autonomous AI Agents Raise Concerns

These remarks come amid growing scrutiny over the capabilities of the most advanced AI models. Recent incidents have demonstrated that certain AI agents can act autonomously and, under specific conditions, access external systems.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has also recently called on industry leaders to slow down the development of their models to better assess and manage associated risks.
