The Impact of AI on the Job Market: Senior Roles Thrive, Junior Positions Decline

The influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on the labor market has become a major concern for many. As automation appears to spare few professions, the significant reduction in the cost of replacing employees and executives is accelerating this transition.

A recent U.S.-based study has revealed compelling insights. Conducted by researchers from Stanford University and King’s College London, the study analyzed a sample of 1.25 billion job postings from 41 countries and 154 million employment records between January 2021 and March 2026.

The findings indicate that companies utilizing AI create more jobs than those that do not. However, these gains disproportionately benefit senior employees at the expense of younger workers. During the study period, the number of employees in senior positions increased by 6.7% in companies adopting these new technologies, while the number of junior employees declined by 3%. Although overall hiring increased, the share of young workers in these companies decreased. Essentially, AI reduces the need for junior labor while expanding opportunities for senior roles. This trend is even more pronounced in highly digitalized economies.

Warnings from AI industry leaders and employees in recent weeks regarding the risks that AI models pose to humans are therefore well-founded. But can slowing the pace of innovation restore depth to the job market? The technologies already available, if properly integrated into businesses, are sufficient to cause significant disruption.
