Spain Extends Job Search Visa from 3 to 12 Months to Attract Foreign Talent

Effective May 20, Spain has officially extended the validity of its job search visa from 3 to 12 months, aiming to attract more foreign qualified workers to fill labor shortages in various sectors, according to Schengen News.

In practice, this visa allows non-European professionals to settle in Spain for a year to look for a job. Once a contract is obtained, the job search visa is automatically converted into a work visa, entailing the usual obligations towards Spanish social security and tax administration.

To benefit from this extended visa, candidates must meet at least one of the following conditions, according to Publico:

  • Having obtained a degree from a Spanish university;
  • Being a child or grandchild of a Spanish citizen;
  • Holding a qualified and in-demand profession in Spain.

Applicants must also demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to live in Spain for a year, amounting to at least €600 per month or €7,200 in total.

The application dossier must include:

  • A university degree (bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D.) obtained in Spain;
  • A valid health insurance policy covering the entire stay;
  • A declaration proving sufficient financial resources;
  • A clean criminal record in Spain and previous countries of residence. The application must be submitted during the validity of the study permit or within 90 days after its expiration. Note that this visa can also benefit those who plan to start a business in Spain.
