Advance Pay Requests Surge in France as Employees Seek Early Access to Wages

Advance pay requests are rising sharply in France, as an increasing number of employees seek to access a portion of their compensation before the end of the month. Data from two specialized platforms reveal a particularly marked year-over-year increase, providing a new indicator of the financial pressure weighing on household budgets.

Significant Growth Across Major Platforms

At Stairwage, advance pay requests increased by 10% between September 2025 and September 2026, while the average amount requested rose by 15%. The platform, established in 2020, is currently used by approximately 200,000 employees across 400 companies. On a monthly basis, 12% of eligible employees make at least one request, with the average amount corresponding to 18% of their salary.

The trend is even more pronounced at Rosaly. The startup, which partners with 450 companies representing another 200,000 employees, reports a 30% year-over-year increase in requests. Rosaly also notes that employees are increasingly turning to this mechanism more frequently.

Understanding Advance Pay in France

An advance pay allows an employee to receive a portion of their salary corresponding to work already performed, prior to the standard payment date. In France, monthly-paid employees can request an advance during the second half of the month, up to a maximum of 50% of their monthly salary. Employers are not permitted to refuse a first request within a given month, although they may decline a second request made during the same period.

Implications for Employers

For businesses, the rise in advance pay requests presents a new management challenge. Specialized digital solutions are focusing on automating the processing of requests, disbursements, and their integration into payroll processes. Stairwage, for instance, now covers more than 200,000 employees, highlighting the growing scale of this operational need.

A Growing Financial Tool

While these figures do not represent a national measurement of all French employees, they illustrate a clear trend among large populations using these services: advance pay is becoming a more common tool for financial management, particularly for covering everyday expenses or unexpected costs.
