Price Ceiling for Bananas Set by Ministry of Commerce

The Ministry of Commerce announced today, October 1st, the establishment of price ceilings for the sale of bananas on the local market. The price of one kilogram of Egyptian bananas is now capped at 5 dinars, while bananas from other origins cannot exceed 7 dinars.

Regulatory Efforts to Protect Consumers

This decision is part of the efforts to regulate the market and protect consumers from the surge in prices. Economic control services have been mobilized to ensure compliance with these tariffs, with the seizure of cargoes introduced through smuggling and parallel circuits. The confiscated quantities will be reinjected into organized circuits at the fixed prices.

Combating Smuggling and Speculation

It is worth noting that in May 2025, over 3,600 boxes of illegally imported bananas were seized in Nabeul, revealing the extent of parallel circuits that fuel speculation and maintain prices at levels considered excessive.

Tunisia's Dependence on Imports

Tunisia is almost entirely dependent on imports to meet national banana consumption. Egypt is one of the main sources of supply, with 2,000 tons imported by the Tunisian Trade Office during Ramadan 2024. Imports from other origins complement this supply, but often at higher prices.

Objectives of the Price Ceiling

By setting these price ceilings, the Ministry of Commerce aims not only to stabilize prices but also to combat smuggling networks, while ensuring a better balance between supply and demand.
