Artisanal Fishing in the Gulf of Gabès Takes a New Turn: Solar-Powered Boats to Reduce Carbon Footprint

Thanks to a funding of approximately 1 million Tunisian dinars from the United Kingdom, several artisanal fishing boats in the Gulf of Gabès will be equipped with solar-powered motors. The goal: to reduce fuel consumption, limit emissions, and protect the region's particularly threatened marine biodiversity.

This transformative project, launched by the British Embassy in Tunisia, is being implemented in partnership with the WWF North Africa, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME), the Tunisian Agency for Agriculture and Fisheries (APIA), fishermen's cooperatives, and solar technology providers.

For fishermen, the impact is twofold: reduced energy costs and a more environmentally friendly fishing practice. The Gulf of Gabès, known for its rich but fragile wetlands, is becoming an open-air laboratory for a sustainable energy transition.

This project illustrates the UK's commitment to supporting Tunisia in its climate change efforts, while promoting the local blue economy.
