Cybersecurity in Africa: A Growing Concern

=====================================================

In 2023, a staggering 74% of organizations in Africa fell victim to at least one cyberattack, marking an 18% increase from the previous year, according to the fourth African Cybersecurity Report by CESIA. This report, based on direct interviews with sector professionals in 15 African countries, highlights a surge in cybercriminal activity.

Phishing Remains the Most Common Attack

Phishing remains the most prevalent type of attack, accounting for 57% of cases in 2023 (compared to 51% in 2022 and 69% in 2021). Social engineering follows closely, at 35% (compared to 30% in 2022 and 28% in 2021), along with ransomware and vulnerability exploitation.

Lack of Confidence in Innovative Solutions

Despite the surge in cyberattacks, confidence in innovative solutions and startups remains low, with over half of organizations (54%) in Africa not using them, mainly due to a lack of opportunities, knowledge, and maturity in the field.

Key Causes of Attacks

According to the study, the main causes of attacks include:

  • Lack of security awareness
  • Unpatched vulnerabilities
  • Security skills deficit
