African Startup Founders Face High Stress Levels and Loneliness, Survey Reveals
According to the "African Founders Wellbeing Survey Report", 86% of African tech startup founders report a significant impact on their wellbeing, facing high levels of stress, burnout, and anxiety. Moreover, 78% of them consider being a founder a lonely job.
Another issue is that founders rarely discuss their stress. Only 14% are extremely open with others, and 1 in 4 consults a therapist or coach.
Women, in particular, face unique stress factors. They are 2.3 times more likely to feel lonely or isolated, and 53% of women fear failure, compared to 33% of men.
Despite these challenges, the vast majority (81%) affirm that they appreciate the founder's journey, and nearly two-thirds would prefer to launch a new business rather than take a job if their company were to fail.
This testifies to the resilience and ambition of African startup founders, who, despite the challenges, have the ability to overcome obstacles in a complex and sometimes hostile environment.
