Uganda Signs Agreement with UAE for Construction of New International Airport

Uganda has signed a protocol agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the construction of a new international airport, marking the third airport of its kind in East Africa. This move further expands the UAE's economic footprint beyond its interests in renewable energy, oil, and gas sectors.

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry will build the airport just outside Kidepo National Park in northeastern Uganda, near the border with Kenya. The project's cost has not been disclosed. Construction is set to begin in August 2024, with a commitment to complete the project within the allotted timeframe.

The airport is expected to boost tourism by attracting visitors to Kidepo National Park, which spans 1,442 kmĀ² and is known for its lions, giraffes, buffaloes, and other big game. The agreement also includes the construction of tourist hotels within the park to stimulate the tourism sector and Uganda's economy.

According to the 2023 tourism industry performance report, international tourist arrivals reached 1.2 billion visitors, a 56.5% increase from 2022. This marks a rebound after the health crisis, with 82.6% of international tourists who visited Uganda in 2019 returning last year. To consolidate this momentum, improve the tourist experience, and attract more visitors, the government has undertaken to rehabilitate roads leading to Uganda's tourist attractions, particularly national parks. The airport will complement these efforts.

For the Emiratis, this investment will reinforce their presence in a strategic region for their future, with the continent's natural riches. This is a visionary move.
