Recent Rainfall Brings Relief to Persistent Drought

The recent rainfall recorded across the country has provided a welcome respite to the persistent drought, according to data published by the National Agricultural Observatory (Onagri). Several meteorological stations have reported significant rainfall levels, particularly in the northern and central regions.

Among the most waterlogged areas, Aïn Draham recorded 38 mm of rainfall, closely followed by Tabarka (36 mm), El Kef (35 mm), Saadia Bargou, and the Lakhmess dam (32 mm each). These rainfall events not only replenish water reserves but also support agricultural crops in their growth phase.

The positive impact of these rains is already reflected in seasonal statistics. Onagri reports an exceedance of the usual rainfall average in several regions of the country: 116% in the Northeast, 104% in the West-Central region, 152% in the East-Central region, and 104% in the Southeast and Southwest regions.

This return of rainfall offers a reassuring outlook for the current agricultural season, particularly for cereal crops and pastures, while improving the recharge of groundwater aquifers. For a country regularly facing water stress, this dynamic is perceived as an opportunity to be seized in terms of sustainable water management.
