New Security Measures for Subscribers Announced by Ministry of Communication Technologies and INT

The Ministry of Communication Technologies and the National Telecommunications Authority (INT) have announced new security measures for subscribers. From now on, telecom operators must deactivate SIM cards that are not identified or have incomplete identities. The activation of a new line will only be possible after verification with a valid identity document.

During a press conference, authorities highlighted the strong growth of subscriptions in Tunisia. As of May 2024, mobile coverage reached a record of nearly 16 million subscribers, and mobile internet usage has significantly increased. However, this expansion has also led to an increase in cybercrimes and scams, often linked to the unauthorized use of SIM cards and incorrect registrations.

To address these issues, the following measures have been put in place:

  • Update and correction of registers
  • Suspension of lines with incomplete identities
  • Mandatory presentation of a valid identity document for subscription
  • Prohibition of SIM card sales on the streets and in markets
  • Transition from classic SIM cards to e-SIM cards
  • Development of the "My Number 186CIN#" service to verify numbers associated with an identity
  • Sending notifications for each new subscription

These measures aim to enhance the security of subscribers and prevent fraudulent activities.
