Leoni to Continue Expansion Projects in Tunisia Amid Auto Sector Growth
German industrial group Leoni plans to move forward with its expansion initiatives across multiple regions in Tunisia. The company, which has maintained a presence in the country for nearly five decades, reaffirmed its commitment as Tunisia’s automotive components industry continues to solidify its role in European supply chains.
Strategic Meeting & Future Roadmap
The announcement followed a meeting on Monday, August 24, between Salah Zouari, Minister of Equipment and Housing (overseeing the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy), and Mohamed Larbi Rouis, President and CEO of Leoni Tunisia. During the discussion, Rouis outlined the group’s current operations and future roadmap, emphasizing the ongoing rollout of expansion projects across several Tunisian regions.
At this stage, no specific investment figures or detailed implementation timelines were disclosed.
A Half-Century of Industrial Presence
Leoni’s Tunisian operations date back to 1977. Over the years, the group has established multiple production facilities in Bizerte, Sousse, and Monastir, currently supporting approximately 30,000 jobs nationwide. Its operations are deeply integrated into global automotive manufacturing networks and also extend to the electrical and electronics sectors.
Tunisia’s Automotive Sector: A Growing Economic Pillar
This strategic presence aligns with a sector that has become a cornerstone of Tunisia’s economy. According to the Tunisian Automotive Association (TAA), over 280 companies were active in the automotive and components sector in 2025, generating roughly €3.9 billion in exports. By June 2026, the association reported the sector nearing €4 billion in export revenue and supporting around 120,000 jobs.
Attracting New Foreign Investment
The sector’s momentum continues to attract new foreign capital. Notably, last May, Chinese conglomerate Taikang Electronics announced plans for its first overseas manufacturing plant in the Sousse region, targeting the production of automotive electronic components and the creation of 300 direct jobs.
