Mobile Network Reliability in Sub-Saharan Africa Gets a Boost

In Sub-Saharan Africa, millions of people rely on mobile networks to access healthcare, education, and financial services. However, telecom infrastructure often suffers from frequent outages, primarily due to the absence or instability of the power grid.

A Concrete Decision

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, has taken action. It is investing $45 million in IPT PowerTech, a company specializing in energy services for telecommunications. The announcement was made on March 23, 2026, and targets three countries: Ethiopia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Scope of the Investment

The financing covers 2,235 telecom sites, which will be modernized, operated, and maintained. Nearly 90% of these sites are located off the national power grid or in areas with unstable power supply. Solar panels and batteries will replace or reduce the use of diesel generators, which are still widely used.

Why It Matters

Diesel is expensive, polluting, and creates a heavy logistical burden for operators. With solar power, significant savings are expected:

  • 52% reduction in electricity costs in Ethiopia
  • 30% in Liberia
  • 26% in Sierra Leone Fewer outages also mean a more reliable mobile network. Schools, health centers, small businesses, and households will directly benefit from improved connectivity.
