Bank Credit to Individuals Reaches New High

The outstanding bank credit to individuals has increased by 368,138 MTND as of the end of September 2025, totaling 30,404,574 MTND. For the second time, the threshold of 30 billion dinars has been exceeded.

Breakdown by Category

  • The outstanding consumer credit has reached 5,312,891 MTND, its highest historical level. Over nine months, it has evolved by 203,633 MTND. Demand for this type of financing is sustained, driven by the ease of access to these loans for employers, on the one hand, and the growing financial needs of Tunisian households, on the other.
  • Housing renovation credits have totaled 11,317,930 MTND, an increase of 364,615 MTND since the beginning of the year. There has been an acceleration compared to the first nine months of 2024. However, this does not necessarily indicate a recovery in small construction projects, as these credits are used for consumption, especially for small amounts.
  • Loans for housing have recorded a significant decline in outstanding credit, confirming the deep crisis in the real estate sector. For comparison, over the first three quarters of 2023, when interest rates were slightly better, the increase was 254,896 MTND.
  • Vehicle loans have timidly resumed their growth, totaling 430,392 MTND.
  • University credits are limited to 14,955 MTND only. This is a niche that is developing but is far from influencing or reflecting the overall trend.

Overall Analysis

Globally, the figures reflect the current economic gloom and the effect of a high-interest rate environment. Consumption is losing a significant driver, to the benefit of inflation control.
