Egypt Unveils National Strategy for Smart Cities
Egypt officially launched its national strategy for smart cities on September 30, a roadmap aimed at transforming its urban spaces to address demographic, environmental, and economic pressures. The announcement was made in Cairo in the presence of several ministers, international organizations such as the World Bank, and bilateral partners, including the Swiss Embassy.
Key Pillars of the Strategy
The strategy is based on several pillars:
- Environmental sustainability
- Modernization of infrastructure
- Integration of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things
- Citizen participation
Objectives and Implementation
The strategy aims to develop new planned cities and improve existing urban areas through:
- Enhanced connectivity
- More efficient management of energy, water, and waste
- Equitable access to public services The Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, led by Sherif El-Sherbiny, is driving the implementation of the strategy.
Social Inclusion and Digital Transformation
The Minister of Local Development and Environment, Manal Awad, emphasized that the initiative puts the citizen at the heart of urban transformation, ensuring social inclusion and spatial justice. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is contributing to the digital aspect of the strategy.
International Cooperation and Support
The presence of international organizations and bilateral partners, such as the World Bank and the Swiss Embassy, underscores the importance of cooperation and support in achieving Egypt's smart city goals.
