Tunisia Ranks 75th in the 2026 Legatum Prosperity Index: Economic Outlook & Investment Insights
Tunisia secured the 75th position out of 161 countries in the 2026 Legatum Prosperity Index, an annual benchmark published since 2007 by the UK-based Legatum Institute. Among the five other North African nations covered in the study, none outperformed Tunisia: Morocco follows closely at 76th, trailed by Algeria (83rd), Libya (115th), Egypt (120th), and Sudan, which ranks last in the region at 152nd.
Despite this regional lead, Tunisia has yet to reclaim its historical peak of 66th place, achieved in 2017. Since then, its ranking has gradually slipped, though it has consistently remained ahead of its North African peers.
A Moderately Industrialized Economy
The report categorizes Tunisia’s economy as moderately industrialized, with a gross domestic product (GDP) surpassing $51 billion. The country is home to 12.4 million residents and boasts a 1,200-kilometer Mediterranean coastline.
On the trade front, olive oil, dates, textiles, and electrical machinery remain key export drivers. Conversely, Tunisia continues to rely heavily on imports for wheat, refined petroleum products, natural gas, and a significant portion of its vehicle fleet.
A Strategic Benchmark for Investment & Entrepreneurship
Built on a comprehensive set of socio-economic and institutional indicators, the index provides a valuable benchmark for assessing Tunisia’s relative attractiveness compared to regional neighbors—though it does not signal a recent upturn in economic momentum.
For investors and project developers, a sector-specific analysis proves far more insightful than the overall ranking. Tunisia’s established export base—spanning olive oil, dates, textiles, and electrical machinery—highlights mature industries where new production or value-added processing facilities could seamlessly integrate.
Meanwhile, the country’s ongoing reliance on energy and cereal imports continues to strain macroeconomic balances, indirectly shaping the broader climate for investment decisions.
